Get outside, take a walk and discover a magical fairy land at Kumbartcho Sanctuary, Eatons Hill. This sanctuary was once a zoo, and is located on 6 hectares of bushland, 30 minutes north of Brisbane CBD. Alden and I visited this hidden gem recently after hearing about it from our neighbour.
First we set off on a scenic walk past a large dam, spotting plenty of wildlife on the way. The bushland is home to many native creatures including koalas, snakes, frogs, turtles, butterflies, possums and of course brush turkeys.
A magical fairy village
We followed the signs to the Fairytale trail where we found a magical village filled with tiny fairy homes, including Peter Rabbit and Wally Wombat’s abodes. Kids can write a letter to the fairies and post it to them in the fairy letterbox.
Alden loved exploring the little town and was particuarly excited to knock on Peter Rabbit’s door and peek inside his house. We enjoyed a picnic over looking their houses before we raced some cars on the speedway and set off for the rest of our walk.

Playground and Environment Education Centre
At the end of our walk we had a go on the playground equipment located near to the carpark. This area includes a little cottage for kids to play in and a BBQ with shaded picnic tables. Also on the grounds of Kumbartcho Sanctuary is an Environment Education Centre which includes displays on local flora and fauna, and a Nursery that stocks mostly local native species and is run by volunteers.
Tips
- Take mosquito repellant because there were quite a few around.
- The Kumbartcho Sanctuary walk is 430 metres, and takes approximately 10 minutes. Leave the pram behind if you can – it’s a little difficult to avoid some steps and dirt pathways.
- Pack a picnic – there are some nice shaded areas to eat.
- If you’re planning to stop into the nursery on your visit – bring cash as they do not have EFTPOS facilities.
